About This Course

The Urban AI MOOC is a dynamic and self-paced six-week course offering a comprehensive exploration of key topics in urban artificial intelligence, from smart cities to equity in urban planning. Designed for both students and practitioners, the course aims to familiarize participants with Urban AI applications in Africa. In the Urban AI MOOC, our goal is to acquaint learners with the fundamental concepts of Urban AI and the principles that underlie smart cities. Over the course of six weeks, we aim to guide our learners through diverse modules, covering topics ranging from Urban AI basics to exploring equitable cities, understanding the global Urban AI ecosystem, examining real-world case studies, engaging with Africa-based AI experts, and discussing policies to foster Urban AI adoption.

The course is structured into 6 weeks covering 6 modules. Module 1 introduces fundamental concepts, exploring urbanization trends and AI's role in shaping smart cities. Module 2 delves into socio-technical solutions, justice-driven urbanism, sustainability, spatial equity, and ethical considerations surrounding AI. Module 3 explores AI regulations, addressing challenges and solutions. Module 4 focuses on practical applications in mobility, infrastructure, urbanism, and environment. Module 5 offers insights from industry leaders, showcasing Urban AI projects in Africa. Finally, Module 6 examines smart city policies, national AI strategies, and key factors for successful urban AI policies.
